Pentecost Sunday - 28th May 2023

Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Catholic Church, it was on this day that the Holy Spirit of the Risen Lord descended upon the Apostles and other disciples of Jesus, empowering them with the divine gifts and graces necessary to carry out the mission of spreading the Gospel.

Christ's Church finds its most immediate and visible expression in the parish. It is there that the Church is visible in a place. The parish is the Church living in the midst of the homes of her sons and daughters.

The true meaning of the parish becomes clear in the light of faith. It is the place where the mystery of the Church is present and at work, even if at times lacking persons or means, even if at other times it might be scattered over vast territories and submerged in crowded cities. For this reason, the Church

is not principally a structure, a territory, or a building but rather, the family of God, a fellowship afire with a unifying Spirit, a familial and welcoming home, the community of the faithful.

The Mackenzie Catholic Parish is the Church in our regions. We are a community suited to the celebration of the Eucharist, suited because it is a community of faith and an organic community made up of Christians and the ordained minister who is its hierarchical bond with the Diocese of

Christchurch and the universal Church.

Through our regular celebration of the Eucharist, our parish is united with the Risen Lord, the living source of our growth, and we are brought into communion with the Triune God and with the whole Church on earth and in heaven.

As we celebrate Pentecost 2023, the Birthday of the Catholic Church, let us be reminded that just as Christ loves us and gives Himself totally to us, so the Holy Spirit loves us and gives himself to us completely. For this, we pray fervently, "Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit, and we shall be created, and You shall renew the face of the earth"
