Parish News and Notices 2nd July 2023

1. World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon - In the coming month, I join the WYD pilgrimage through France and onto Lisbon, Portugal from July 15 to August 8. Of the 120 pilgrims, 37 are from our diocese of Christchurch. Please be assured this will not be a holiday, as I travel with 120 pilgrims living in pilgrim accommodation. I will, however, carry the intentions of each of you to Lyon, where we will spend a few days visiting the sacred sites connected to Mother Aubert, Bishop Pompallier and St Irenaeus. Of note, last year Pope Francis recognized St Irenaeus as the 37th Doctor of the Church.

Note: While I am away, please direct any inquiries to Tony Hill, our parish Chairman, at (03) 685 6163. For sacramental inquiries, please contact Fr. Michael Welsh at 027 531 1086. They will be available to provide support.

2. School Holiday – Our Parish School, St. Joseph's, concluded their second term with a time of adoration in the chapel on Friday morning. The children were taught that Jesus, present in the Eucharist in the monstrance, gazes upon each and every one of us. They were invited to openly share a special blessing they enjoyed the most during the term and an incident they are sorry for. We wish our pupils, their teachers, parents, and school associates a restful and blessed holiday. Additionally, we pray for increased engagement between our parish and school communities.

3. Safeguarding – We prioritize the practice of safeguarding, recognizing that "if one member suffers, we all suffer together with it" (1 Cor 12:26). Pope Francis has emphasized the Church's responsibility to implement necessary measures on all levels to protect minors and vulnerable adults, and to respond to their needs with fairness and mercy. We are grateful for Clodagh Ward, our diocesan officer, who has provided valuable guidance in helping us understand the importance of safeguarding, why we are implementing it now, and what it entails for our community. 4. Please join us in prayer for the following intentions:

The souls of Mary Pat Hoare, Ines Magi Quinones, Mary Brosnahan, Theresa Gabities, Mrs. Donovan, Fr. Kevin Foot, and Chuck Blanchard. We also remember Maxwell Rye, Marie Conaghan, Julia Higgins (on the 26th of June), James Higgins (on the 13th of June), Maureen Bengie (on the 17th of June), and Robert Benzie (on the 7th of October).

We also pray for all those who are going through a challenging period in their lives. May God's healing touch be upon them and provide them with strength and comfort during this time of trials.
